Cozy Fall Fun

🍂 A Family Guide to Fall Fun in Sacramento

There’s just something magical about fall. The air starts to cool, the leaves turn golden, and weekends fill with pumpkin spice, cozy sweaters, and family adventures. If you’re looking for ways to soak in the season with your kids, here are a few of my favorite family-friendly fall activities around the Sacramento area:

🎃 Pumpkin Patches & Corn Mazes

From Dave’s Pumpkin Patch in West Sacramento to Nick and Ray’s Pumpkin Patch in Sacramento and beyond, local farms turn into autumn wonderlands every September and October. Kids can pick the perfect pumpkin, climb hay bales, wander through corn mazes, or take a wagon ride.

🍏 Apple Hill Adventures

Just a short drive up Highway 50, Apple Hill is a fall classic. Families can snack on fresh apple cider donuts, sip warm cider, and explore U-pick orchards. Pack layers and a camera—between the crisp air, orchards, and changing leaves, it’s a perfect day trip.

Here’s some can’t-miss stops I hit every time!

Hidden Star Camino features a great kids’ play area, picnic spots, and shade!

Grandpa’s Cellar is a must visit! Their famous fall coffee flights include drool-worthy favorites like Apple Maple Lattes and S’mores. They also have incredible pies and desserts. Let the kids run off the sugar rush in the grassy area.

Abel’s Acres has many activities like pony rides, a maze, and more. It can get busy - arrive early!

🐔 Fall Festivals

Sacramento and the surrounding towns love a good harvest festival! The Elk Grove Giant Pumpkin Festival (Oct 4–5, 2025) and the Placer County Farm & Barn Tour are just a couple of kid-friendly favorites. Expect games, live music, crafts, and plenty of food vendors.

🌳 Nature Walks

Sometimes the best fall memories are the simplest—like walking or biking along the American River Parkway. Bring a picnic, let the kids collect colorful leaves, and enjoy the golden light that makes fall photos so dreamy.

Up for a little longer adventure? Truckee boasts incredible color in early fall. The Independence Trail in Auburn often features fabulous leaves, and beautiful river views.

🚂 Yolo Explorer Pumpkin Train

If you're looking for a fall outing that blends a little adventure, train ride magic, and classic pumpkin-patch charm, the Yolo Explorer Pumpkin Train is something special. It’s a unique opportunity to soak up autumn scenery from the rails, enjoy onboard activities, and of course, pick out your own perfect pumpkin.
